Latifa Echakhch

With her works, above all, her installations and environments, Latifa Echakhch invites the viewer to reflect on the rigidity and contradictions of society.

Using diverse techniques, she confronts the modern world’s socio-political and cultural issues through objects loaded with symbolic meanings: she decontextualises them, placing them in a space full of possibility, which encourages an active reading from viewers. In this way, she combines ‘politics and poetry’, which she herself describes as the main instrument of her work. The interpretation of her works is thus left open: everyone can project onto them their own ideas and memories.

Latifa Echakhch received the Zurich Art Prize in 2015 and L’air du temps – Prix Marcel Duchamp in 2013. She participated in Art Basel, Basel (2013). Various institutions have presented solo exhibitions of her work: Museum Haus Konstruktiv in Zurich (2015), Hammer Museum in Los Angeles (2013) and Musée d'Art Contemporain in Lyon, among others. Her installations A chaque stencil une révolution (2007) and Fantôme (Jasmin) (2012) were exhibited at Palazzo Grassi in the exhibition “The Illusion of Light” (2014-15).
